A few minutes later, we pulled into a long driveway with a white farmhouse at the end. Standing on the front porch was a woman with gray hair and plenty of wrinkles, maybe in her late seventies, beaming with warmth and welcome. When I parked the car, she walked down the front steps, a little more energetically than I was expecting. Bernard got out, and I followed suit. The old woman walked over to me with arms stretched out for a hug and a full-faced smile that only old people can truly achieve.

“Heather,” she laughed with a brittle voice as we hugged. “Oh, I was sure I’d never see you again. What a gift!” She patted my cheek with her slender hand. “Qaletaqa,” she said, turning to Bernard. “It’s still not easy to look at that face. I think Heather agrees with me. Have you found no way to shed your skin, old snake?”

“Not yet,” he answered.

She gave a thoughtful nod. “In time. For now, we should go. The new generation of Stinsons are here, peacefully napping so that I could meet you. I didn’t really want to bother them any further, so I found this old sourpuss further down the road. I couldn’t make her life any more miserable if I tried…so I figured we could use her house.” It was impossible to imagine that face ever being miserable, and I laughed to think of it. “Perhaps you could give me a ride?” she continued. “I walked here, much to the Stinsons’ surprise, but these legs are a little out of shape.”

“Of course,” I said, and opened the door behind the driver’s seat for her.

She giggled, perhaps at my manners, and got in.
